Get Started on SKALE

Whether you're new to blockchain or a seasoned pro, this guide will help you take your first steps in the SKALE ecosystem. From adding SKALE Chains to your wallet, to understanding how to bridge to chains, to utilizing sFUEL, this guide has everything you need to go from noob to native.
Let’s start with the basics

SKALE's BUILT DIFFERENT

SKALE is fundamentally BUILT DIFFERENT. It’s all about making blockchain accessible and user-friendly. SKALE Network is designed to be gas-free and fast, offering a truly invisible blockchain experience. Forget about high fees and complicated blockchain processes, SKALE's unique architecture ensures smooth, hassle-free interactions for both users and developers.

With millions of active users and billions of dollars saved in gas fees, SKALE is pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the world of Web3. Built for scalability, efficiency, and ease of use, SKALE allows anyone to explore decentralized applications (dApps), from gaming to AI to DeFi and social platforms.

Hub Chains vs. App Chains

On SKALE, there are two types of chains that cater to different needs: Hub Chains and App Chains.

Hub Chains

Hub Chains are designed to host multiple dApps on a single blockchain, each dedicated to a specific function within the SKALE ecosystem. Hub Chains offer a more accessible entry point for developers who want to avoid the complexities and costs associated with running a dedicated App Chain.

Calypso Hub

A versatile hub supporting a range of Web3 dApps across various sectors

Europa DeFi Hub

Tailored for DeFi dApps, offering shared computing resources to streamline decentralized finance operations.

Nebula Gaming Hub

Designed for gaming dApps, providing a robust environment for high-performance gaming experiences.

Titan AI Hub

Focused on AI dApps, providing an optimized blockchain environment for machine learning.

App Chains

App Chains are dedicated, customizable blockchains for individual dApps. From gaming to AI to DeFi and Social platforms, these chains are wholely owned by a single dApp. Developers can spin up app chains that are fully customizable according to the unique requirements of their dApps.

Connect Wallet

Once your wallet setup is complete, click the “Connect Wallet” button again and select your installed wallet, then follow the prompts in the wallet pop up.

Congrats! Your wallet is now set up and connected to the portal, so you're ready to start exploring the SKALE ecosystem.

Fully leverage SKALE

Adding SKALE Chains to Your Wallet

To fully experience the diverse range of dApps and services available, users may need to interact with multiple SKALE Chains. Adding these chains to your preferred wallet allows for seamless navigation and engagement across the entire SKALE ecosystem. SKALE currently supports a large number of wallets, including Coinbase, Metamask, Rabby, Rainbow, and WalletConnect.

Congrats

Once the chain is added to your wallet, you can access it under the network toggle at the top left of your wallet, allowing you to switch networks easily. You'll now be able to interact with the SKALE chain the same way you do Ethereum or any other EVM chain.

Transact seamlessly

Adding sFuel to Your Wallet

SKALE provides a gas-free experience, enabling users to transact seamlessly without the burden of escalating transaction fees.

SKALE utilizes sFuel, a valueless "gas" token that powers all SKALE blockchains and allows them to operate without traditional transaction fees. sFUEL also plays a crucial security role. By rate-limiting transactions through sFUEL, SKALE effectively eliminated the risk of potential DDoS attacks and spam transactions.

To add sFuel to your wallet:

Get sFUEL

Click “Get sFUEL” to distribute sFUEL to your wallet. Note that sFUEL is chain-specific, so in this case, you’d be adding sFUEL to your wallet on the Europa DeFi Hub Chain. Make sure to select the correct chain where you wish to receive the sFUEL. Many first-time users on SKALE will repeat this process for every SKALE chain in their wallet.

Transfer assets

Bridging to SKALE

In blockchain, bridging refers to the process of transferring assets from one blockchain to another. This allows users to move tokens or interact with dApps across different blockchain ecosystems without being confined to just one blockchain. For example, you may want to transfer your assets from Ethereum to a faster, more cost-effective network like SKALE to take advantage of its zero-gas environment and use the unique dApps in the SKALE ecosystem.

To Bridge to a SKALE Chain:

Select the SKALE destination chain

Select your desired SKALE Chain from the top left corner as a destination for your assets. For instance, if you want to access SushiSwap, a leading DeFi application, you would select the Europa DeFi Hub as your destination, since SushiSwap operates on the Europa DeFi Hub Chain..

Or let’s say you want to play Haven's Compass, a first-person shooter game available on the Epic Games Store, you would choose the Nebula Gaming Hub Chain.

Fun Fact: when you bridge to any SKALE chain, sFuel is automatically added to your wallet. Whenever you run out, just follow the steps outlined above.

Get sFUEL

Click the “Get sFUEL” button to add sFUEL to your wallet. Note that sFUEL is chain-specific, so in this case, you’d be getting sFUEL on the Europa DeFi Hub Chain. Make sure to select the correct chain where you wish to receive sFUEL, or simply do this for every SKALE chain in your wallet.

Add Token to Wallet

If this is your first time bridging to this SKALE Chain, you'll need to add the token to your wallet in order to display your balance.

Click the "Add Token" button then follow the prompts in the wallet pop-up notification.

FAQs

How is SKALE gas-free?

staking crypto

SKALE operates with a unique model where developers pay a flat chain subscription fee to host their dApp on a SKALE Hub Chain or to spin up their own SKALE chain. These fees effectively subsidize gas fees for end-users, allowing for a seamless, gas-free transaction experience.

What wallets can I use on SKALE?

staking crypto

The wallets that have confirmed functionality with SKALE’s multi-chain architecture, and therefore are recommended, are Encrypt Wallet, Metamask, Coinbase Wallet, Rainbow, and Rabby Wallet.

Can I bridge assets from any blockchain to SKALE?

staking crypto

Yes, you can bridge assets from over 45+ chains to SKALE using Meson.fi directly via the "Transfer" page on the SKALE Portal.

What is SKL and where is it available?

staking crypto

SKL is the governance token of the SKALE Network. It is an ERC20 token used to reward validators and delegators who stake their SKL tokens to secure the network, as a payment method for developer chain subscription fees, and for on-chain governance. Note that SKL is not a gas token, as SKALE is a gas-free network. You can find the trading markets for SKL via CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko.

What should I do if I face issues while bridging?

staking crypto

If you encounter any issues while bridging, visit the Portal page and click on the "?" button at the top right of the page. Then select "Open Support Chat," explain your issue to the chatbot, and if unresolved, you can open a support ticket. A member of the SKALE team will then get in touch to assist you.

I bridged a token to a SKALE Chain, but I don't see it in my wallet. What should I do?

staking crypto

If you bridged tokens to a SKALE Chain but don't see them in your Metamask, you may need to manually import them as they are not visible by default. To do this first make sure the SKALE Chain is added to your wallet by reviewing the “Adding SKALE Chains to Your Wallet” section above. Then, import the token to your wallet by following step 8 (Add Token to Wallet) from the “Bridging to SKALE” section.

What is sFUEL?

staking crypto

sFUEL is a valueless "gas" token that powers the SKALE blockchains and allows them to operate without traditional transaction costs. sFUEL also plays a crucial security role.
