NFTrade x SKALE: NFT Artist Spotlight with Joshua Mays

Joshua Mays is an Oakland-based painter, muralist, and illustrator. Born in Denver, Colorado, he studied illustration at Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design and graphic design at the Community College of Denver. He lived and worked in Philadelphia for eight years before launching a pivotal nomadic creative journey, exhibiting and scattering commissions worldwide before landing in the Bay. 

Joshua is currently developing the City & Province of Olgaruth, a fictional realm weaving threads connecting his last two decades of work with storytelling and character creation to create concepts for gaming, animation, and immersive installations.

"When I draw, I feel a creative gravity take control, and each piece becomes a wild ride as abstracts become forms, and those forms become characters, relationships, and stories. 

I like to think of my paintings as psychic windows. I love creating portals for people to fall into a different reality and expand their perspectives. I want to communicate a sense of adventure within self-exploration. I want to accentuate the magic of these fragile moments and consider the relationships we have with each other and what that means for our collective experience. 

Beginning about four years ago, I’d been meaning to distance myself from commissions long enough so drawing, painting, and writing in the studio would produce certain strange possibilities. 

The pandemic allowed that to happen, and the strangeness occurred: faces appeared, and they revealed incredible details about their world, a fictional city named Olgaruth. 

The name is derived from the first names of my grandmothers: Olgar and Ruth. 

Olgaruth is divided into 31 districts, three major parks, and two bio-wilderness refuges. I’m currently writing a collection of characters who are Olgaruth residents and witness various cultural movements and metaphysical events that reveal threads connecting imagery that I’ve been creating over the years. Those threads also expand towards future concept designs for video games, animation, fashion, brand collabs, motion pictures, and future exhibitions of J.Mays originals, limited editions, and NFT releases." - Joshua Mays
