What Is a Hub Chain?

SKALE is made up of many chains, each optimized for specific use cases. Some are app-specific—dedicated to a single game, DeFi protocol, or ecosystem. Others, like Europa, are hub chains: shared infrastructure chains designed to serve the entire network.

The Europa Hub plays a critical role in unifying fragmented liquidity and ensuring that assets and users can move seamlessly between SKALE chains without the need for costly, gas-heavy Layer 1 bridges.

What Makes Europa Unique

Launched in March 2022 as part of the SKALE V2 upgrade, Europa was the first hub chain on the network.

Europa’s mission is to provide a consistent and efficient pathway for token transfers, app composability, and liquidity routing across the SKALE Network. It accomplishes this by acting as the central touchpoint for IMA (Interchain Messaging Agent), SKALE’s native bridging protocol. Any token moved through Europa maintains a consistent standard across all SKALE chains, eliminating duplication and fragmentation.

Europa also serves as the go-to environment for key infrastructure providers, fiat onramps, and DeFi protocols, making it one of the most essential pieces of the SKALEverse.
